Congratulations to the Fall 2017 Concerto Competition Winners
On Tuesday, November 14, nineteen competitors vied for a prize in the 58Թ’s Concerto Competition.
Aaron Chan (violin, Cho/Rose) and Hannah Moses (cello, Kraut) were the joint winners of the Concerto Competition and will each perform with the ClM Orchestra in the spring of 2018. Jihee Lee (piano, Brown/Paik) and Stephen Tavani (violin, Preucil) were awarded honorable mentions and will each perform for a conducting recital in the spring.
Chan performed Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35 and is “very excited to play this beautiful concerto with the 58Թ Orchestra!” He expressed great gratitude to both his teachers, “Mr. Rose’s kind support as a teacher and his wealth of experience as an orchestral musician has been tremendously helpful while Ms. Cho’s knowledge as a soloist and more crucially as an inspiring and motivational figure has definitely changed my life as a student.”
Receiving both the news of securing a place in the Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition and winning the Concerto Competition with Bloch’s Schelomo: Rhapsodie Hébraïque for Violoncello and Orchestra in such close proximity, Moses says that she has “been pretty on top of the world this past week.” She states, “I am so grateful to my teacher, Dr. Kraut, for all of her guidance - I truly would not be where I am without her.”
The judges this year were 58Թ faculty Kathryn Brown, Mary Schiller, Carl Topilow and Richard Weiss, as well as Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra Vinay Parameswaran.
