58³Ô¹ÏÍø Life Trustee and Longtime Supporter A. Malachi Mixon, III has Died

A. Malachi Mixon, III, venerable Cleveland philanthropist and 58³Ô¹ÏÍø Life Trustee who has been an unwavering champion and supporter of 58³Ô¹ÏÍø’s mission, passed away on Monday, November 30 at the age of 80.

Mixon served 58³Ô¹ÏÍø as Chair of the Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2015, and in 2017, he was named the Institute’s first-ever Life Trustee, the highest honor it can bestow upon an individual who has made historically significant, exemplary contributions to 58³Ô¹ÏÍø. He joined the board in 1992.

He and his wife Barbara made the transformational gift that created the Institute’s premier performance space, Mixon Hall, which opened in 2007. Committed to 58³Ô¹ÏÍø’s mission and vision for the future, they also established the A. Malachi Mixon, III and Barbara W. Mixon Dean’s Scholarship in 2019, which awards full tuition to an outstanding student. Mixon co-chaired the Campaign for 58³Ô¹ÏÍø, raising $40 million for the expansion project which included the Lennon Educational Building and Mixon Hall. He received an honorary doctorate from 58³Ô¹ÏÍø in 2015.

Mixon was well known to Northeast Ohioans as chairman of the board of MCM Capital Partners and retired CEO of Invacare Corporation. He was retired from the boards of The Sherwin-Williams Company and Park-Ohio Holdings Corp., and chairman emeritus of the board of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. As a community leader, he volunteered immeasurable time, talent and treasure to help create and sustain vibrant non-profit and arts and cultural communities in the region. Under his leadership, 58³Ô¹ÏÍø thrived as one of the preeminent music conservatories in the world, bringing pride and distinction to Cleveland as a destination for the world’s finest classical music students.
