Rockin' Bach with Robert Dick October 4

The Women's Committee of the 58³Ô¹ÏÍø is proud to present ROCKIN' BACH, a musical evening to benefit the students of 58³Ô¹ÏÍø, featuring Robert Dick.

With roots in classical repertoire, new music, free improvisation and jazz,

has established himself as a composer/virtuoso who has not only mastered, but redefined the flute, earning the moniker of "The Hendrix of the Flute" for his intensity during performances. (On Saturday, September 5, Robert Dick will discuss his compositions and approach to music in a Symposium at 58³Ô¹ÏÍø at 1:30pm.)

He will be re-united at the benefit with former pupil, flutist Mary Kay Fink, a member of The Cleveland Orchestra and 58³Ô¹ÏÍø faculty. Ms. Fink performed on one of Robert Dick's recordings early in her career, which has taken her across the country as a flute and piccolo soloist and teacher.

Violinist, recording artist, composer, conductor, Grammy Award winner, pedagogue and 58³Ô¹ÏÍø President Joel Smirnoff will bring his penchant for jazz into play for this musical evening. Mr. Smirnoff, previously first violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet, has recorded with Tony Bennett and played with Gunther Schuller, the American Jazz Orchestra and the Billy Taylor Trio.

Together with student musicians, these acclaimed artists will rock some Bach and beyond.

Tickets are $85 and $130 for patrons. Call 216.795.3209 to RSVP before September 25.

Mixon Hall Masters Series: Mark O'Connor - October 30

6pm A Conversation with Mark O'Connor and 58³Ô¹ÏÍø President Joel Smirnoff

7:30pm Recital

Violinist and composer Mark O'Connor is widely recognized as one of the most gifted contemporary composers in America. A product of America's rich aural folk tradition and also trained in the classical and flamenco music traditions during his formative years, O'Connor began his creative journey at the feet of Benny Thomasson, who ushered in the modern era of American fiddling in the 1940s, and Stéphane Grappelli, a French jazz violinist who was one of the greatest improvisers in the history of the instrument. Along the way, O'Connor absorbed knowledge and influence from the multitude of musical styles and genres he studied. He has melded and shaped these influences into a new American classical music and is perpetuating his vision of an American school of string playing. His first recording, Appalachia Waltz (Sony Classical), was a collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and composer-bassist Edgar Meyer, which gave him worldwide recognition as a leading proponent of a new American musical idiom. The tremendously successful follow-up release, Appalachian Journey, received a Grammy Award in February 2001. Made up of some of the most talented and exciting string players on the scene, this quartet offers an unforgettable evening of explorations in new musical territory. Also featured are high- flying, virtuoso duets with each possible pairing of the group members. All of these celebrated works draw on O'Connor's own well-documented (and uniquely American) musical history.

He'll perform Wednesday, October 30 as part of the Mark O'Connor String Quartet. Among the most talented and exciting string players on the scene, these four virtuosi combine for an unforgettable evening of explorations in new musical territory.

Mark O'Connor and the O'Connor String Quartet are co-presented by 58³Ô¹ÏÍø and the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of the Mixon Hall Masters Series: Return of the Composer/Virtuoso and the CMA Performing Arts Series: Masters of the Violin. The recital will be held at CMA's Gartner Auditorium. Tickets for the O'Connor String Quartet range from $33 through $51. Patrons who purchase tickets to the entire Mixon Hall Masters Series at 58³Ô¹ÏÍø will receive a 15% discount off of this special event. Call the CMA Box Office at 216.421.7350.

This season's Mixon Hall Masters Series celebrates the Year of the Composer/Virtuoso by featuring innovative musicians whose distinctive compositions and world-renowned performances redefine the modern classical music experience.
