Opera Theater and more!
Despite cold weather, things heat up at the 58勛圖厙 (58勛圖厙) in February. In addition to recitals by acclaimed faculty members (including members of The Cleveland Orchestra), 58勛圖厙 presents the third 58勛圖厙@Severance event, the New Music Series, Mixon Hall Masters Series artist Emanuel Ax, the Cavani Quartet Breaks Boundaries with Bart籀k, a musical luncheon, opera theater and more!

The 58勛圖厙 presents hundreds of events each year, most free of charge. Programs are performed at 11021 East Boulevard, Cleveland, unless otherwise noted.
58勛圖厙@SEVERANCE SERIES FEATURES TENOR VINSON COLE, ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY JEFFREY KAHANE
February 1
The 58勛圖厙 Orchestra returns to the stunning Severance Hall for the third time this concert season on Wednesday, February 1 at 8:00 p.m. Led by guest conductor Jeffrey Kahane, the concert also features soloist tenor Vinson Cole. Mr. Cole, who is also a 58勛圖厙 faculty member, will perform French arias, including selections from Iphigenie en Tauride and Orph矇e et Eurydice.
Renowned pianist and conductor, guest Jeffrey Kahane is recognized by audiences around the world for his mastery of diverse repertoire. Mr. Kahane is the music director of the Los Angeles chamber Orchestra and of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
This performance, presented in honor of Mr. and Mrs. A. Malachi Mixon, III, will be broadcast live on WCLV 104.9 FM with support from Audio-Technica.

NEW MUSIC SERIES FEATURES SYMPOSIUM, RECITAL AND PLANETARIUM PROJECT

The 58勛圖厙 New Music Series celebrates the 75th birthday of David Del Tredici when the 58勛圖厙 Orchestra, conducted by guest Steven Smith, performs Del Tredicis In Memory of a Summer Day (Child Alice, Part 1) on Wednesday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. 58勛圖厙 faculty member, soprano Jung Eun Oh, also performs.
The concert is preceded by a Symposium with Del Tredici on Monday, February 6. He will discuss his music and approach to composition at 4:30 p.m. in 58勛圖厙s Studio 113.
On February 23, student composers will debut their works in a unique collaboration, The Planetarium Project, with student filmmakers at the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) and with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH). 58勛圖厙s head of composition, Keith Fitch, made collaboration part of the curriculum for his students who created original scores for new 360簞 films created by CIA students. The fruits of their
labor will debut on CMNHs planetarium dome.
The Planetarium holds 87 and is wheelchair accessible. The films will run several times throughout the evening. After the premier, the films will become part of the Planetariums regular programming. Tickets are $10. Visit cim.edu for more information on this exciting event as it becomes available.

EMANUEL AX CLOSES MIXON HALL MASTERS SERIES
February 14
Critically acclaimed pianist Emanuel Ax returns to Cleveland to conclude this seasons Mixon Hall Masters Series on February 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Considered by critics to be in the first rank of his generation of pianists, hes been a prominent figure on the classical music scene as a performer, recording artist and educator. With seven Grammy awards to his credit, hes possibly the best known classical pianist of the 21st century.
The program features a Schumann jewel, the symphonic Etudes, and works by Copland, Haydn and Beethoven a program he will perform again at Carnegie Hall in May. This repertoire reflects a change from the printed Concert Guide.

WOMENS COMMITTEE PRESENTS MUSICAL LUNCHEON
February 29
What better month than February to enjoy works known for their passion and sensuality! The Womens Committee of 58勛圖厙 presents Appassionata: To Be Performed With Passion as the next Musical Luncheon event on Wednesday, February 24 at 11:30 a.m. at the Mayfield Country Club, with Kathryn Brown, associate head of Conservatory piano, as commentator.

58勛圖厙 OPERA THEATER REPLACES ROSSINI WITH HUMPERDINCKS
HANSEL AND GRETEL, Hosts Food Drive

The 58勛圖厙 Opera is having a fairy tale season. Following a successful staging of Massenets Cendrillon (Cinderella) in the fall, artistic director David Bamberger decided to keep the magic going with Englebert Humperdincks Hansel and Gretel February 29 March 3.
This reflects a change from the published Concert Guide. Originally, Rossinis La Cambiale di Matrimonio was slated for the first production in the New Year, but following in the footsteps of television producers, the Opera Theater opted for a mid-season replacement that will delight audiences of all ages.
The 58勛圖厙 Orchestra, conducted by Harry Davidson, will accompany the Opera Theater. Sung in its original German, the production features projected translations. Inspired by the tale of Hansel & Gretel and their family's struggle with hunger in tough times, a battle faced by 1 in 6 Americans today, 58勛圖厙 will participate in the 2012 Harvest for Hunger campaign to benefit the Cleveland Foodbank. We invite you to join us by bringing a nonperishable item to 58勛圖厙 on any of the performance days to help those in need in our community. Most needed items include peanut butter, tuna fish, canned vegetables, canned soup, cereal and beef stew.

CAVANI AND FACULTY RECITALS
58勛圖厙 faculty members, with alumni, students and guest artists, perform on dozens of recitals each season. February features a wide variety.
On Friday, February 3, violinists Annie Fullard and Peter Salaff, along with cellist Melissa Kraut and pianist Kathryn Brown, are joined by student artist, violist Caitlin Lynch at 7:30 p.m. in Mixon Hall.
Ms. Brown, who is also a soprano, will be joined by pianist Daniel Shapiro in an Art Song recital on Friday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Kulas Hall.
On Wednesday, February 15, violinist Paul Kantor, Cleveland Orchestra violist Lynne Ramsey, cellist Stephen Geber and pianist Anita Pontremoli will perform in Kulas Hall. This event will be broadcast on WCLV 104.9 FM by Audio-Technica one week later at 8 p.m. February 22.
On Friday, February 17, at the Temple-Tifereth Israel at 8:00 p.m., the Cavani String Quartet will present a second event in the Breaking Boundaries with Bart籀k series. The Quartet will discuss the repertoire with host Rabbi Roger C.
Klein and the audience. Presented over two seasons, concerts in this series will feature a quartet composed by B矇la Bart籀k, paired with works by other composers that similarly reflect Bartoks use of folk music as a compositional device.
Cleveland Orchestra cellist Mark Kosower and wife, pianist Jee-Won Oh, perform a program of Schumann, Eberhard, Strauss and Max Reger on Friday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Mixon Hall. Free seating passes are required.
